Brookline rejects annexation by Boston.
October 7, 1873
Brookline voters reject the proposed annexation by a margin of 2 to 1. A Brookline newspaper later proclaims WE WILL NOT BE SUFFOLK-KATED. A second attempt by Boston to annex Brookline in 1880 also fails, because, according to James O’Connell, “Brookline was establishing a suburban alternative that eventually drained the Back Bay of many of its first families.”
